Network Rail filed an official planning application for a new railway station near Torquay. The new station will be built at Edginswell and will serve a new housing development on the edge of town as well as Torbay Hospital. Council leaders said that Edginswell was the best place for the station as it was the “gateway” to Torbay.
When plans for the new railway station were initially designed the costs were forecast to be at around £13.1m which was back in 2021. The Local Democracy Reporting Service said that £3m would come in from the governments Town Deal funds and that other monies required would be matched with monies from the council, developers and Network Rail.
However, at a meeting of Torbay Council deputy leader Chris Lewis said that the scheme was not progressing as well as planned and could prove even more costly. He concurred that another £10m would need to be found and that the council would need to look at the Government and Network Rail in order to get the necessary funds and the project underway. It had been anticipated that construction works would start this summer and that the station would be open by the end of 2024.
