Engineering Director & Signalling Principles Verifier

Alex is a skilled Engineer at Apex with an excellent career of more than 16 years in the fast-paced rail sector. His journey has covered a wide range of areas, encompassing the installation, testing, maintenance, and design of signalling schemes and products.

His career began as a Network Rail Signalling Technician Apprentice and quickly progressed. His commitment and skill earned him the prestigious title of Apprentice of the Year. This was early acknowledgement of his unwavering commitment within the rail sector.

Alex is an individual with several skill sets, and his possession of an IRSE Principles Licence 1.1550 and IRSE Design Verifiers Licence 1.1160, demonstrates his commitment in his professional development.

As a professional, Alex demonstrates a degree of adaptability. He is skilled at stepping into crucial positions across the board, from Design and Project Engineering to the job of a CRE (Contractors Responsible Engineer) and Design Management. His broad range of abilities provide him a global perspective that enhances every aspect of the projects he manages.

David Smith

Operational Director & Signalling Principles Verifier

David commands an experienced presence in his role as the Operational Director at Apex due to his extensive experience of more than 20 years within the rail sector. During this time, his role has seen him cover various aspects of Signalling Design, Project Engineering and Design Management.

He has gained a vast amount of industry knowledge having worked for major rail brands such as Atkins, Babcock, Network Rail, Hatch Mott MacDonald, Thales & Linbrooke Design. Including working with multinational companies overseas on Light Rail and Metro solutions for their rail network.

David’s journey, which began as a Signalling Design Trainee with First Engineering, is a perfect example of commitment and experience. His significant career spans Signalling Design, Project Engineering and Design Management giving him a thorough understanding of the sector.

The engineering expertise means that he will oversee the company’s safety, quality, and compliance controls. Whilst also managing the day-to-day engineering activities on all Apex Signalling Design projects. He will also oversee any design reviews whilst collaborating with customers to ensure that all projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on time and to budget.
